Sweetgrass Braid - Native Americans consider
sweetgrass sacred for its ability to purify and protect. The smoke is used
to clear objects, places and people. These are the braids that are used
for smudging and Native meditation as well as ceremonial and cleansings.
Many different cultures use the Sweet Grass for the same purposes.
Hold the sweetgrass braid above a heat source or flame to allow a smoke plume to escape. Fan the smoke over the person or object. Sweetgrass will not burn with applied heat. It is most often used to start ceremonies and attract positive energies. In the home, it makes a pleasing fragrance for all occasions. Sweetgrass can also be used to create baskets. |

To smudge is to purify with the smoke from certain sacred herbs. The ritual of purifying with smoke comes from the native peoples in both North and South America. The smoke is created by burning herbs such as sage, cedar, sweet grass and juniper. Smudge bundles should be ignited over a ceramic bowl or an abalone shell containing sand. After you light it gently blow on the embers to produce smoke. Smoke may be used to purify the body, home, office and healing rooms. After smudging, extinguish bundle and store for future use.
